| ¡°THE TATTOOIST¡± STARRING JASON BEHR AND MIA BLAKE STARTING PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, IN SEPTEMBER 2006
THE TATTOOIST is a supernatural thriller in which American tattoo artist Jake Sawyer (Jason Behr ¨C ¡°The Grudge¡±) is a global wanderer who explores ethnic themes in his designs. He discovers the ancient tradition of Samoan tatau and is taken on a devastating journey into Pacific mysticism.
The film also stars David Fane (Sione¡¯s Wedding), Robbie Magasiva (Sione¡¯s Wedding, Stickmen) and Singaporean actress Caroline Cheong (Light Years).
THE TATTOOIST is from writers Matthew Grainger and Jonathan King (Black Sheep) based on an idea by Vela Manusuate. It is the debut feature from Peter Burger, an award-winning film, drama and commercials director. In 2003 his short film Turangawaewae was one of only seven films selected for the Critics Week in Cannes. Industry veteran Robin Scholes, THE TATTOOIST now in production (Once Were Warriors; Rain; Crooked Earth) will produce the movie.
Buena Vista International has acquired the Australian and New Zealand rights to the film which will be released in cinemas in 2007. BVI Managing Director and Vice President, Alan Finney, comments: ¡°In recent years we have been privileged to distribute exciting New Zealand productions such as Whalerider, Sione¡¯s Wedding and No. 2 and we were excited about this project from the moment we first read the script¡±. Producer Robin Scholes said the film referenced an Asian approach to the supernatural but was grounded in Pacific culture. ¡°By combining our two cultures it gives us a point of difference in a competitive and crowded international market, where film buyers are looking for something that is unique¡±.
Filmed on locations in Auckland Central, South Auckland and Singapore and studios in Waitakere City. The creative team includes veteran director of photography Leon Narbey (Whale Rider, No 2), production designer Gary Mackay (The Locals, Savage Honeymoon), costume designer Gavin McLean (The Maori Merchant of Venice), editor Paul Maxwell and composer James Hall (Crooked Earth).

| A new article on ChannelNewAsia. Inking a dealBy Mayo Martin, | Posted: 22 November 2007 1218 hrs For a guy who hasn't even got a single one on him, Kiwi director Peter Burger certainly knows his tattoos. "Did you know that the word comes from the Samoan word tatau? According to women in Samoa, the pain (of getting one) is equal to giving birth," he said. The part-Maori Burger, 34, was in town to promote his movie The Tattooist, the first co-venture between Singapore's MediaCorp Raintree Pictures and New Zealand's Eyeworks Touchdown. "During the early days, they traditionally used a tortoise shell needle to tap continuously into your skin until tears came out of your eyes." In The Tattooist, which opens on Nov 29, Jason Behr (The Grudge and TV's Roswell) plays Jake, a tattoo artist who steals an ancient Samoan tattooing tool. The act unleashes an angry spirit. The movie also stars local actors Lim Yu Beng, Gerald Chew and Caroline Cheong. Budgeted at NZ$5.7 million ($6.3 million), the movie has already enjoyed a successful run in New Zealand where, according to Burger, the tradition is not so much on horror but on "splatstick" horror comedies such as the recent zombie livestock movie, Black Sheep. Horror is one of the genres that Raintree is pushing for as it heads towards making more "borderless movies". In the works for the next collaboration with New Zealand are Maid2Order, Kelvin Tong's sequel to The Maid, and the book adaptation of John Collee's Kingsley's Touch. Back on the subject of tattoos, Burger revealed that he and Behr were made chiefs (or matai) by the Samoan community mid-shoot. "We were all dressed up in traditional gear and our bare torsos oiled. Jason looked great, but I just looked like an anthro-pologist," he quipped. No tattoos? "No tattoos." _____________________________ Do you remember? | |
