Né à New York le 18 août 1969 -un an de plus que moi!-
Christian Slater est le fils de la célèbre directrice de casting Mary Jo Slater et du comédien de théâtre Michael Hawkins.
Christian passe ainsi toute son enfance dans le milieu du spectacle
et, dès l'âge de 7 ans, tient son premier rôle, apparaissant dans la série télévisée "On ne vit qu'une fois".
A 9 ans, il part en tournée dans "The music man", puis joue à Broadway dans "Macbeth", "David Copperfield" et "Merlin l'enchanteur".
Toujours au théâtre, il se produira plus tard dans la reprise off-Broadway de "Landscape of the body", de John Guare,
ainsi que dans "The Christmas Carol" et "Sherlock Holmes",
avec Frank Langella.
On le découvre à l'écran alors qu'il a 15 ans, dans la superproduction de Jean-Jacques Annaud "Le nom de la rose", où il incarne un tout jeune moine copiste au service de Sean Connery.
A partir de ce premier succès, Slater, promu jeune premier, enchaîne les films et donne dans un registre varié : on le voit ainsi en skateur émérite dans "Gleaming the cube", dans la comédie estudiantine "Pump up the volume", touche au western ("Young guns II"), au film à costumes ("Robin des bois"), à la science-fiction ("Star Trek VI"), au film d'amour ("Coeur sauvage", "Pluie de roses sur Manhattan"), au film de gangsters ("Les indomptés"), et a récemment fait face à John Travolta dans "Broken arrow", de John Woo.
En 1992, Christian Slater signe la mise en scène de "The laughter epidemic", une comédie musicale jouée par des enfants dont les bénéfices furent reversés à la Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Il a également fait ses débuts de réalisateur en adaptant une nouvelle de Ralph Lombargila pour Showtime : "Museum of love".
Après "Pluie d'enfer", nous avons retrouvé Christian Slater sur grand écran dans "Julian Po",
présenté au Festival de Deauville.
Récemment incarcéré pendant quelques mois pour usage de drogues,
espérons que le comédien retrouve maintenant sagement le chemin des studios...
